Ryan shines on Rosewall Arena

Seven-year old Ryan Kelso today had the honour of tossing the coin before the start of the first match on Ken Rosewall Arena between Alize Cornet and Nadia Petrova.

Ryan, who was diagnosed with autism prior to his third birthday,  met both the players before the match with his mother and grandmother by his side.

His mum Donna said afterwards it was a special moment for the whole family to see Ryan on the big stage to help raise awareness of the work done by Autism Spectrum Australia (Aspect).

Aspect is the largest service provider for individuals with an autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and their families in Australia.

The range of service provided include; information, diagnostic and assessment, early intervention, Autism Pro (a web based tool for parents and professionals), schools for children with ASD, educational outreach, behaviour intervention, specialised case management, community participation for adults, family support, research and training programs.

Autism spectrum disorders (ASD) are a lifelong developmental disability characterised by marked difficulties in social interaction, impaired communication, restricted and repetitive interests and behaviours and sensory sensitivities.

Autism Spectrum Australia needs to raise $15million over the next 6 years to support projects which will help support the ASD community in improving services.

Thankyou for giving Ryan the amazing opportunity of being on Ken Rosewall Arena at the Medibank International today. It will be a memory he will cherish forever and also hopefully increase the awareness of Autism in our community.
