Stanislas Wawrinka made the third round at the Australian Open, unable to overcome Czech Tomas Berdych. He made the fourth round in Indian Wells recording wins over Andreas Seppi and Sam Querrey (by saving two match points) before falling in two tiebreaks to world No. 3 and defending champion Novak Djokovic. Wawrinka followed this with another fourth round in Miami defeating Andreas Seppi and Igor Andreev before facing Rafael Nadal. He had a successful start to his clay court campaign, reaching the seminfinals in Monte Carlo, defeating compatriot Roger Federer for the first time in his career and claimed an ATP Challenger Tour event in Lugano. Wawrinka also reached the fourth round at Wimbledon, falling to Brit Andy Murray in a late-night five-set encounter.
