Dinara Safina had the best season of her career in 2009, reaching two grand slam finals and finishing the year as world No.2. The Russian became the 19th player to rise to No.1 since 1975 inception of computer rankings and held the top ranking for 26 weeks. She took her career tally of title wins to 12 with victories in Rome, Madrid and Portoroz and finished runner-up five times at Sydney, Stuttgart, Cincinnati, Roland Garros and the Australian Open. Safina qualified for the season-ending Sony Ericsson WTA Championships in Doha but retired from her first round-robin match against Jelena Jankovic with a lower back injury and then withdrew from the tournament. |
